Hip arthroscopy can be used to evaluate the juvenile patient for degenerative changes associated with hip dysplasia. In dogs with excessive articular cartilage wear, a TPO is contraindicated and total hip replacement is recommended. Hip Arthroscopic Surgery is a minimally invasive surgical procedure for the treatment of many common hip disorders. Hip arthroscopy may help postpone the need for hip replacement surgery and to eliminate it altogether. Dr. Klapper predicts that during the next decade, hip implants will dramatically improve.

Causes of Hip Pain
The cartilage between bones provides the perfect lubrication necessary to move joints. Dr. Klapper links hip pain to the destruction of cartilage. If this cartilage is destroyed through a genetic defect, trauma, infection, joint stiffness and decreased range of motion may result. The hip causes a gradual loss of this cartilage when having arthritis in its early phases. The arthritis changes the chemical make-up in the joint
fluid, which leads to irritation of the lining and fraying of the joint. The hip pain associated with this condition is unique among joint pain problems in that it can keep one from sleeping through the night. Hip pain from rolling over can jolt a person from a deep sleep. The articular cartilage of dysplastic hips can be assessed to determine if the patient is a candidate for triple pelvic osteotomy surgery TPO. Previously, there were few treatment options for hip pain, and a hip replacement was virtually inevitable. Theres a fundamental flaw in the concept of taking out someones bone and cartilage and putting in metal and plastic, even under the best possible circumstances, the implant need to be replaced when it wears out. Hip implants will eventually be made of more natural material that wont undergo the same stresses and wear out, but this may be several years down the road. While this technique has improved countless lives, there exists a built-in obsolescence with every implant.
In the interim, hip arthroscopy, which actually helps break the vicious cycle caused by the arthritis, may postpone some of the damage. Hip arthroscopy offers patients with hip pain a viable alternative. Active individuals who have painful hips are the best candidates for hip arthroscopy. where there exists an opportunity to preserve the amount of cartilage they still have.

Outpatient Procedure in hip arthroscopy is done on an outpatient basis and performed under a regional anesthesia. In hip arthroscopy doctor insert a camera lens and the specialized instrument while the image is displayed on a video screen so that the doctor can have a clearer view. The doctor can clean out the frayed lining and inflammation may prevent further deterioration of the joint. This procedure takes about one half hour to perform.

Hip arthroscopy has become an alternative to open hip surgery for many people. Hip arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure which allows smaller incisions, quicker recovery times and decreased patient morbidity. Popularity of hip arthroscopy has widely increased in recent years due to our highly improved technology and the positive results of a long term patients studies. The great alternative in hip arthroscopy is the open hip surgery but the hip arthroscopy is not yet indicated for all this painful hip condition.
